Who Are We?
Madison Park Greenways is a group of neighbors like you who are working to make our streets safer and more comfortable for everybody.
Mission: The Madison Greenways Group of over 140 residents and community leaders is actively identifying, advocating for, and activating routes that empower people from 8 to 80 years old to feel safe when walking or biking to neighborhood destinations within the McGilvra Elementary School Attendance Area. We have volunteer neighborhood leaders living in Madison Park, Madison Valley, Arboretum, Denny Blaine, and Washington Park. From the McGilvra Elementary student who wants to walk or bike to school to the grandparent aging gracefully in place who prefers to conduct business locally, our efforts seek to foster healthy, active, and comfortable route options for people of all ages and abilities.
Partnerships: We most closely collaborate with the Montlake (Montlake, Portage Bay, Roanoke) and Central Seattle (Capitol Hill, Central District, Madrona) groups. Our primary local partnerships are with the Madison Park Community Council and the Madison Valley Community Council. Please join us and help keep our community one of the most livable in the city.

Get involved or learn more about our top District priority to make sure the Central Area greenway is safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities.
Current Campaigns
- Madison – McGilvra Intersection. Obtain construction funding for the intersection of E Madison St and McGilvra Blvd. Voted third place (just within the window for potential funding) for $90,000 in Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) construction funding for the intersection of E Madison St and McGilvra Blvd. Funds are needed to cover anticipated cost overruns and are matched by $400,000 of other city funding. We will also apply for a large Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) grant to cover the entire project cost.
- Arboretum Neighborhood Traffic Safety. Construct the Lake Washington Loop neighborhood greenway. Apply for construction funding in the 2017 grant year once our design is finished and we have accurate costing information.
- Madison Valley East-West Greenway. Design the Hillside Ave neighborhood greenway. Applied in 2015 and 2016 for $40,000 of Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) grant funding, but was not prioritized within the top three to be advanced for costing. Traffic study data showed high rates of speeding behavior by The Bush School. Will need to apply for construction funding in 2017.
- Lake View Park Intersection Safety. Create a safe way for people walking or biking to cross Lake Washington Blvd from E Harrison St to Lake View Park at Hillside Drive. Applied for $50,000 of Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) grant funding in 2012 and 2015. Will need to apply for multiple grants in 2017.
Our Victories
- 2015 Won a $50,000 Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) grant to design the Lake Washington Loop neighborhood greenway from E Republican St to Boyer Ave E.
- 2015 Won a $40,000 Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) grant to design the E Harrison St neighborhood greenway from 27th Ave E to Lake Washington Blvd.
- 2015 Obtained 4 new bike racks for Madison Valley businesses, installed at Cafe Flora in place of the old wheel bender in the median.
- 2014 Won a $90,000 Neighborhood Park and Street Fund (NPSF) grant to redesign the intersection of E Madison St and McGilvra Blvd after a Madison Park resident was critically injured when struck while walking across E Madison St in a marked crosswalk during broad daylight between Wells Fargo Bank and Starbucks. Design to reach 100% in June 2016.
- 2014 Bike Corral installed in Madison Valley at the request of the adjacent business owner and condominium members.
- 2014 Five new bike racks installed at MLK Fame Community Center at the request of the community center.
- 2014 Intersection rebuild on 26th Ave E at Boyer Ave E to discourage speeding cut-through traffic swinging southbound onto 26th Ave E.
- 2014 Constructed the McGilvra Greenway to make the two blocks closest to McGilvra Elementary School (37th Ave E and E Garfield St) safer for kids walking or biking to school; at the request of residents along 37th Ave E and McGilvra PTA members who bike and walk with their children to school. Improvements included traffic calming, road surface repair, sidewalk repair, reducing the speed limit to 20mph and clarifying right-of-way at one intersection.
- 2013 Dorffel Drive traffic experiment and subsequent report.
- 2013 Reconfigured the intersection of E Madison St at 37th Ave E after a road design flaw resulted in a child being struck and critically injured while riding his bicycle to school.
- 2012 SR520 bike path added to Portage Bay Bridge and route connections to University of Washington added back into the plan.
- 2012 Crowd sourced mapping: We scouted and identified a crowd-sourced map of important walking and biking routes (see map below) that was largely incorporated into Seattle’s Bicycle Master Plan.
- 2011 Madison Park Greenways founded in collaboration with the Madison Park Community Council.
